The second Japanese-owned Aeon mall opened its doors in Cambodia this week, catering to thousands of visitors during their soft and grand opening on May 29th and 30th. After following the success of the first Aeon Mall in the Tonle Bassac area, Aeon 2 Mall is a welcoming addition to the emerging Sen Sok area which borders the Tuol Kork, Russey Keo, Meanchey, Preak Pnov, and Por Senchey districts. Stretching over 10 hectares and covering 151,000 square meters of floor space, the second mall is 1.5 times bigger than the first mall and can accommodate parking for up to 2,500 cars and 2,000 motorbikes.
Visitors took to social media once they saw the polished layout of the vast complex, posting about the brand-named department stores, variety of restaurants and the first Imax cineplex in Cambodia. Bookworms and comic book fans were delighted to see the Japanese bookstore chain Kinokuniya, to be finally launching in Cambodia. Pizza lovers on a budget also found Singapore-based pizza chain Pezzo Pizza launching at Aeon 2, becoming the country’s first kiosk in the country to sell pizza by the slice.
Several more shopping malls, community centers and retail venues are also scheduled to be built in Phnom Penh this year. Plans and construction for Midtown Mall, Community Mall, Parkson Phnom Penh City, Noro Mall community mall, The Bridge Retail Mall, The Park Community Mall, and Downtown 93 Community Mall, are already underway.
